Syd Georgia er innen rekkevidde.
South Georgia is in sight
ORCAs, ORCAs, killerwhales, seals, dolphins, æ kødde ikkje, det er faen meg all over. The South Georgia government officials venter oss inn like etter klokken 09:00 søndag morgen.
Almost at Grytviken
Day 6 at sea, and our legs are starting to yearn after proper movement after living at a 15 degree angle for more than a working week now. We have been blessed with wonderful experiences these past few days at sea. This Saturday morning was no exception. It all started quite calmly; Tormod was in the galley preparing dinner from Doris the sheep's right front leg, assisted by first officer Julie. Sigrid was on watch up on deck with Matias. Chris was also above deck, trimming the sails. We were sailing at 6.5 knots by sail, heading 103 degrees. Dag Marius was lying on the sofa reading, Wayne was sitting at the card table playing solitaire on his computer, and Simen was writing blogg updates. In short, it was a pretty easy-going Saturday morning. Until all of a sudden, we heard shouting from the deck "Salty fat hell, look! ORCAs, ORCAs, killerwhales, seals, dolphins, I'm not joking, they're everywhere! Lads, come and have a look!" Of course, it was all hands on deck, the sea was boiling with life. Long-finned pilot whales (we thought they were killer whales at first), Antarctic fur seals and hourglass dolphins were all over the place, it was crazy, and all the while down below in the galley, a lamb stew with chilli, garlic and more was bubbling.
Even though we are at ease now having been at sea for a while, we can feel the excitement rising within each of us as we move closer to South Georgia. If we continue as we are doing now, we should be just off Cumberland Bay at 04:00 hrs. That means we will be able to sail into Grytviken by daylight. The South Georgian officials will be expecting us just before 09:00 hrs on Sunday morning.
