Grytviken

Da sola sto opp idag såg vi Syd Georgia. Et kjærkomment syn! Innseglinga langs kysten til Grytviken var virkeleg eit vakkert syn. Alle årstider viste seg ved kystlinja. Sol, sludd, snø og grønkledde fjellsider. Storslåtte fjell aapnet seg igjennom skyfrie flekkar på himmelen. Det var virkeleg fantastisk.
Vi la til havn rett ved det gamle industriområdet i Grytviken, som foredla alle ressursane kvalane hadde å by på. Ein spøkelsesby, fylt med rustne hus, tankar og gamalt maskineri. Stygt og vakkert, på same tid.
Etter at dei lokale styresmaktene Kiron, (1/3 av styresmaktene på Syd  Georgia) hadde sjekka oss inn, gjekk vi oss ein etterlengta tur rundt om i Grytviken. Her fekk vi sjå kongepingvinar, pelssel og enorme elfantselar.
Ein liten forsmak på kva vi skal oppleve i mykje større skala etterkvart som vi kjem oss igang med padlinga.
Skipperen tok eit laar av "Fat Doris", og laga ei fortreffeleg lammesteik. Det kjem nok godt med, for imorgon har vi tenkt å klatre i dei bratte fjellsidene for å nyte utsikta og trimme late sjøbein.

Grytviken

At sunrise today, we saw South Georgia! A welcome sight indeed! The approach along the coast to Grytviken was truly a beautiful sight. All four seasons were reflected along the coastline. Sun, sleet, snow and green mountains. Enormous mountains opened up before us through the cloud-free patches of sky. It was really enchanting. 

We docked next to the old industrial area of Grytviken, previously used to strip all the resources from captured whales. A ghost town, filled with rusty houses, tanks and old machinery. Ugly and beautiful at the same time. Once Kiron, the local authorities (1/3 of the authorities on South Georgia) had checked us in, we went for a long overdue walk around Grytviken. Here, we saw King penguins, fur seals and enormous elephant seals. A little appetiser for what we are going to experience in much greater scale once we start kayaking. Our skipper took one of Fat Doris' thighs and made a delicious dish of roast lamb. We will need that; tomorrow we are planning on climbing some of the steep mountains to enjoy the views and trim our lazy sea legs.
