November. Hilsen oss på Pelagic.
Happy Halloween |
Problems on the Falklands
We arrived at Stanley yesterday and ate dinner aboard the Pelagic with the crew: Chris, Wayne and Julie. The chemistry between us is promising. The Pelagic is a fine sailing yacht built for purpose. The afternoon was spent loading fresh vegetables and luggage aboard. Chris briefed us about safety aboard, washing up routines, flushing the head etc. We will go through safety on deck once we set sail.
The equipment crates that we sent from Oslo on 13 October should have arrived with the plane we were on yesterday, but at 8 pm we were informed that they had not arrived! We had double-checked this before we left Santiago and had been told that they would be on the flight with us, sadly this was not the case.
BUT, we don't winge on our trips so we have now moved onto back-up plan no.1:
The challenge is getting the crates from Santiago to Punto Arenas, the flight from PA to Stanley is rarely full so that's not a problem, but Argentinian sanctions do not allow more than one flight per week to the Falkland Islands. To get the crates on time, we are going to have them transported by truck or with a midweek flight from Santiago to PA. The ship FRAM will then arrive and hopefully pick up our crates and sail from Stanley on 7 November.
In the meantime, we've ordered back-up food and new tents from the local store here in case the transport fails again. If everything goes well, then we can cancel this order.
After solving this problem, we all went out and celebrated Halloween in the local pubs. Would you believe it, we even had an after-pub party!
We sail from Stanley on Monday 1 November. Greetings from all of us on the Pelagic.
